There is a category of stone work that full-size polishers simply cannot reach. The inside of a sink bowl, the underside of a drainboard, the tight return on a waterfall panel, the last inch of a radius where the backer pad hits the deck before the abrasive hits the stone — these are the details that get finished badly not because the operator lacks skill but because the machine is the wrong size for the geometry. Most shops solve it by fighting a seven-inch polisher into a four-inch space, and the finish shows it.

The Alpha AIR-300 exists to close that gap. It is a pneumatic mini polisher weighing 1.6 pounds, described by Alpha Professional Tools as a smaller version of its well-known AIR-658, and it is built specifically for detail wet polishing in confined areas like sink rims and bowls. What follows is the published specification, what each number means for the shop air system, and the operating limits that decide whether the tool lasts years or fails early. Every figure comes from Alpha or the product listing.

What the AIR-300 Is and Why Pneumatic Matters

The AIR-300 is a high-performance pneumatic polishing tool with a central water-feed system, meaning water is delivered through the spindle to the center of the accessory rather than sprayed at it from outside. Centre-feed matters more on small accessories than large ones, because a 3 inch pad in a tight bowl has nowhere for externally applied water to reach once the pad is buried in the work.

Air power has a specific advantage in wet stone work. A pneumatic motor has no electrical windings to protect from water, which is why compressed air remains the standard for the wettest detail operations in stone shops. It also means the tool is only as good as the air behind it — an undersized compressor turns an excellent polisher into a frustrating one, and that is the single most common complaint about air tools generally.

Two variants share the same body. The AIR-300 carries a 5/8-11 spindle, the standard thread on stone accessories in the United States market, and the AIR-304 carries an M14-2 spindle used on much European tooling. The internals, air requirements, and speed are identical; the only decision is which thread matches the backer pads already in the shop.

Water delivery is plumbed for a shop or a jobsite. The supplied adapter connects the water hose to a faucet or garden tap, which means the tool does not require a dedicated water system to run. That portability is part of the design intent — Alpha describes the polisher as converting easily from in-shop use to on-site work, which matters for remedial polishing after an install goes wrong.

The weight figure deserves more respect than it usually gets. At 1.6 pounds, or 0.731 kilograms, the AIR-300 is light enough to be held in one hand at odd angles for extended periods. Detail polishing is slow work performed in awkward postures, and tool weight is what determines whether the last cut-out of the day gets the same attention as the first.

The Published Specification

Speed, and why the two numbers differ

Alpha publishes a no-load speed of 5,800 RPM. That is the free speed with nothing touching the stone, and it is not the speed the tool actually polishes at. Alpha states that under load the speed drops to an optimum polishing range of 3,500 to 4,500 RPM. Both figures are useful, and confusing them is how accessories get overspeeded.

Alpha is explicit that speed should not be raised by increasing pressure. Operating the tool above the recommended pressure specification may result in premature failure, so the correct response to a tool that feels slow is to check the air supply and the accessory, not to open the regulator. Pneumatic tools are not variable-speed tools with a dial hidden on the compressor.

Air requirements are the real specification

The AIR-300 consumes 10 CFM at 87 PSI, which Alpha also expresses as 0.6 MPa or 6 bar. The product description gives an operating band of 85 to 95 PSI while Alpha's own FAQ references 85 to 90 PSI as the recommended operating specification, so treat roughly 85 to 95 PSI as the outer envelope and 87 PSI as the target. The consumption figure is the one that decides whether the tool works properly.

Air quality is the other half of the supply question. Compressed air carries moisture and, in an older system, scale and rust from the inside of the lines. Both end up in the motor of any air tool connected to it. A filter and regulator at the drop is inexpensive next to the cost of a polisher and it removes an entire category of failure that otherwise looks like a defective tool.

Alpha specifies a minimum 3 HP compressor per tool, and the scaling is explicit: adding a second polisher increases the requirement by another 10 CFM and another 3 HP. That is a genuinely important planning number for a growing shop. Two operators sharing a 3 HP compressor will both experience a tool that starts strong and fades, and both will incorrectly blame the polisher.

Accessories and water

The tool accepts 3 inch and 4 inch discs along with 2, 3, and 4 inch rubber pads, and Alpha caps the maximum accessory diameter at 4 inches. That limit is stated as a safety requirement and as a torque requirement: larger accessories demand more torque than the AIR-300 can supply, and running it that way results in overheating failure. It is a hard limit, not a guideline.

Water use is up to 0.5 gallons per minute with the needle valve fully open. On a detail tool that is a meaningful volume, and the needle valve exists so the operator can dial it back for work where flooding the piece is counterproductive. Enough water to keep the abrasive cool and clear is the target; more than that mostly makes a mess.

Spotlight:

The AIR-300 runs faster than some accessories are rated for. Diamax, for example, rates its Cyclone resin polishing drums at a maximum of 3,000 RPM, while the AIR-300 turns 3,500 to 4,500 RPM under load and 5,800 RPM free. Always check the accessory rating against the tool before mounting anything, and for dry work Alpha specifies abrasives usable under 4,000 loaded RPM. The tool does not know what you have threaded onto it.

Operating Limits Alpha States Plainly

Alpha is unusually direct about what this tool is not for, and the limits are worth repeating because ignoring them is how a 1.6 pound polisher becomes a warranty claim. It is recommended for wet sanding and polishing only. For wet core drilling, profiling, and grinding, Alpha recommends the AIR-680, which offers more torque.

Cutting is explicitly ruled out. Alpha states the AIR-300 has only 5,800 RPM at no load, that this is not enough speed for diamond blade cutting, and that it is unsafe to use as a cutting tool. Drilling is ruled out in the same way, with Alpha pointing to the AIR-680 and a C-handle attachment for faucet-hole work. These are not soft recommendations.

Dry polishing, on the other hand, is permitted. Alpha states the tool can be used for dry applications with dry polishing abrasives such as Ceramica DRY, quick-change pads, sandpaper, or other dry pads rated for use under 4,000 loaded RPM. That gives the tool a second role on touch-up and restoration work where water is impractical.

Lubrication, Maintenance, and Warranty

Pneumatic tools fail from neglect far more often than from wear, and the AIR-300 has a short, specific maintenance routine. Alpha recommends inserting 2 to 3 drops of pneumatic oil into the air line and running the tool for about a minute daily at the end of the work shift. That is the whole daily procedure, and skipping it is the most reliable way to shorten the tool's life.

The oil type is not negotiable. Alpha states that motor oil cannot be used and that products of that kind can cause the vanes to stick in the rotor; the tool requires a special lightweight pneumatic oil, supplied as Alpha rust inhibitor oil and available separately as part number AIR-008. Alpha also advises against an automatic oil feeder in the air supply line, because the volume, grade, and composition of oil delivered that way may cause premature failure.

Beyond daily oiling, Alpha recommends greasing the tool housing periodically, noting that failure to do so may reduce the life of the gears. Grease and the applicator are sold as separate part numbers. None of this is complicated, but it does need to belong to somebody — shared tools with no named owner are the ones that never get oiled.

Warranty coverage is described two ways in Alpha's own materials, and it is worth knowing both. The product feature list states a one year tool warranty, while the FAQ describes coverage against defects in material and workmanship for 90 days from the date of original retail purchase, with proof of purchase required for warranty repairs. Check the current manual and keep the receipt either way.

The tool ships as a working kit rather than a bare machine. Alpha lists an air and water twin hose assembly, a faucet and garden hose adapter, a 17mm wrench, rust inhibitor oil, and a reusable stackable toolbox. For a shop adding detail polishing capability for the first time, that means the only additional purchases are the compressor capacity and the abrasives.

Fitting It Into a Shop

The honest case for the AIR-300 is that it does one family of jobs better than anything else in the rack and does not pretend to do the rest. Sink rims, bowls, tight profiles, and confined returns are its territory. A shop that does a handful of undermount sinks a week will notice the difference on the first one; a shop that does one a month may be better served by improving its existing setup first.

Air capacity is the deciding factor and it should be settled before the tool is ordered. Ten CFM at 87 PSI with a 3 HP minimum is not an unusual demand, but it is a real one, and a shop already running nailers, blow guns, and a second air tool off a marginal compressor will find the polisher exposes the shortfall immediately. Measuring available CFM beats assuming it.

Think about the accessory inventory too. A tool capped at 4 inches uses smaller pads than the rest of the shop, so the detail polisher tends to need its own grit set rather than sharing the seven-inch pads already on the shelf. That is a real cost to plan for, and it is also why the pads for this tool are worth storing with the tool instead of in the general pad drawer.

Dust and water handling deserve a thought as well. Wet polishing controls dust effectively, which matters because stone contains crystalline silica and the OSHA permissible exposure limit is 50 micrograms per cubic meter as an 8-hour time-weighted average, with an action level of 25 micrograms per cubic meter. A detail polisher used dry without proper controls gives back the protection that wet work provides.
