MB Stone Care MB-14 Refine Honing Powder for Marble & Calcite Stone
MB-14 Refine is a professional honing powder for natural stone restoration on marble, travertine, limestone and other calcite-based stone. Used wet at low speed, it flattens and refines the surface to a matte finish and eliminates mild grinding swirls, preparing the stone for polishing. Six grits from 80 through 800 let you step through a full honing sequence, and each grit is stocked in 1 lb, 2 lb, 8 lb and 25 lb sizes. It is rated 1 of 5 on the manufacturer difficulty scale but is sold for professional use only.

- Clean the surface to be honed of all debris, sand and dirt.
- Strip any topical coating or crystallizer from the surface. Honing powder must reach bare stone.
- Mask and protect any adjacent surface that splatter could damage.
- Countertops: work 2-3 sq ft at a time using about 1/2 teaspoon of powder, laid down in a circular pattern smaller than the pad, then add enough water to make a heavy cream-like paste.
- Fit a hog's hair pad to a right-angle grinder or polisher, place it on the product, and keep the speed at no more than 900 RPM - 600 RPM works best - under as much pressure as the machine will take before it stalls.
- Floors: work 10-12 sq ft at a time with 2 oz of powder, using a floor machine weighing 130-160 lb and turning no faster than 175 RPM, releasing enough water from the tank to form a heavy cream-like paste.
- Follow a consistent, pre-determined working pattern, the same way you would with diamond pads, so the finish comes out even.
- Keep the slurry wet by adding water as needed, and add more MB-14 as needed. Never run this powder dry.
- Keep working the slurry until the desired finish is reached.
- Rinse well, then squeegee the water off a countertop or pick it up from a floor with a wet/dry vacuum.

What does honing powder actually do?
It creates a flat, even finish and eliminates mild grinding swirls, preparing the stone for a later polishing step. The surface must already be properly prepared before honing powder is applied.
Do I need a machine to use MB-14?
Yes. Honing has to be done with a suitable polishing machine to get a uniform finish - a rotary polisher for countertops or a floor machine for floors.
Can I use it dry?
No. Honing powder must never be run dry. It is always applied wet so the surface is not damaged.
Will it leave a glossy or matte surface?
Matte. The exact level shifts slightly depending on which of the six grits you use. A glossy result requires a separate polishing product.
Can MB-14 remove medium scratch patterns?
No. This honing powder does not remove scratch patterns, and it is not designed to address severe chemical etching or deep scratches.
How much powder should I buy?
The manufacturer guideline is roughly 1 lb per 50-75 sq ft. Each grit is stocked in 1 lb, 2 lb, 8 lb and 25 lb sizes.
Which grit should I start with?
Grits run 80, 150, 250, 400, 600 and 800. Coarser grits cut faster on a rougher surface; finer grits refine toward the final matte finish. Work through the sequence rather than jumping grits.
Does the surface need stripping first?
Yes. Any topical coating or crystallizer must be removed, and all debris, sand and dirt cleaned off, before the stone is in a ready-to-hone state.
