Volakas marble is quarried near the village of Volakas in the Drama region of northeastern Greece, and it has built a reputation as one of the more dependable milky-white marbles on the market, close enough to Carrara whites in background tone that the two get compared constantly. What sets Volakas apart in the yard is the vein color: grey and light brown veining running in loose diagonal patterns across a bright white to slightly cream ground, rather than the stark charcoal veining of Arabescato or Calacatta.

For a fabrication shop, Volakas is valued as much for consistency as for looks. Commercial grading within Volakas is tighter than in many Italian marbles, which makes it easier to order multiple bundles for a large job and get slabs that read together. This guide covers what drives Volakas grading, how to fabricate it as a dolomitic marble, how to handle the fragility that comes with long runs and cutouts, and what to tell clients about care once the job is installed.

What Grade Actually Means on a Volakas Slab

Volakas is graded commercially on vein density and background purity, and the difference between grades is mostly about how much grey and brown veining shows against the white ground. Lower commercial grades carry heavier veining and more visible mineral streaks, while higher grades approach a near-solid white field with only light, fine veining. Neither grade is a quality defect; grade is a pattern classification, and the right choice depends entirely on what the design calls for.

Even within a single grade, block-to-slab variation is real. A block quarried from one face of the deposit can run noticeably whiter or veinier than a block quarried twenty feet away, which is why ordering by grade name alone without seeing the actual bundle is risky for any job where slab-to-slab matching matters. Request current photos of the specific bundle assigned to a job, not stock photography, especially for projects needing multiple slabs to read consistently across a run.

Volakas is not a calcitic marble, and the difference shows up at the saw and at the polisher. Published technical sheets for Volakas White give a composition of roughly 92.5 percent dolomite and 7.5 percent calcite, a Mohs hardness of about 3.5 to 4, water absorption of about 0.19 percent by weight, and open porosity of about 0.54 percent by volume. The vein material carries the clay, iron, and other trace minerals responsible for the grey and brown coloring. A dolomitic marble is somewhat harder and more scratch-resistant than a calcitic white and reacts more slowly to acids, but it is still a carbonate stone: sustained contact with citrus, wine, or an acidic cleaner will etch it. It is far softer than granite or engineered quartz.

Designers reach for Volakas over a Carrara-grade white for practical reasons: broader slab availability at consistent grading, a brighter overall background in the higher grades, and often a better price point for the volume a large commercial project needs. It is not a substitute in every case since the vein character is genuinely different, warmer and more diagonal than Carrara's classic grey striping, but for projects prioritizing supply consistency, Volakas is frequently the more practical specification.

The trade-off for that bright, consistent background is that Volakas often carries open veining, meaning the vein material has actual voids or weak seams rather than a fully solid bond to the surrounding stone. Those open veins are where breakage happens during handling and fabrication, and it is the main reason Volakas gets filled and reinforced at the quarry or in the shop before it goes into heavy use. Understanding this up front changes how a shop plans cutting, transport, and installation sequencing.

Fabricating and Finishing Volakas

Cutting and Edge Profiling

Cut Volakas the way you would any marble: moderate feed rate, polished face down on the bridge saw, and a slower final pass on any edge that will remain visible. Because open veining is common, run a visual check along the intended cut line before committing, since a saw path crossing directly through an open vein is far more likely to chip or crack than one that runs parallel to it or crosses it at a shallow angle.

Edge profiling follows the same logic as vein orientation. A profile that removes material right at an open vein concentrates stress exactly where the stone is weakest, so route around known weak points where the design allows, or add extra support at that section of the edge during profiling. Eased and bullnose profiles remain the most forgiving choices on Volakas for the same reason they work on any veiny marble.

Filling and Resin Treatment of Open Veins

Open veins on Volakas are routinely filled, either at the quarry before the block is cut into slabs or in the shop before fabrication begins. A clear or color-matched epoxy resin is worked into the void under vacuum or by hand, then cured and ground flush with the surrounding surface. Filling is not cosmetic patching; it restores structural continuity across the vein so the slab can be cut, routed, and installed without the void propagating into a crack.

Inspect every slab for unfilled voids before it goes to the saw, since a void missed at the quarry becomes the shop's problem the moment a blade or router bit crosses it. Tap testing along suspect veins, a light tap listening for a hollow sound, catches most voids that are not visually obvious. Any void found should be filled and allowed to cure fully before fabrication continues on that slab.

Handling Long Runs and Cutouts

Long countertop runs in Volakas need full support under the entire span during both fabrication and transport, not just at final installation. A slab that is adequately supported once set on cabinetry can still crack in transit if it flexes even slightly while being carried unsupported at the ends. A-frames, slab clamps, and rigid transport boards sized to the piece are worth the investment on any run over a standard single-bowl sink base.

Cutouts follow the same relief-drilling discipline that applies to any marble: round every interior corner with a drilled relief hole before making straight cuts, and never leave a sharp interior corner as the stress riser it would otherwise become. On Volakas specifically, check whether an open vein passes near the planned cutout location before cutting, since a cutout that intersects a vein close to a corner is a higher-risk combination.

Polishing Volakas follows the same full resin-pad progression used on other white marbles, moving through fine grit increments without skipping steps, since the bright white background shows scratch halos more readily than a darker stone would. The dolomitic matrix cuts a little slower than a calcitic marble at the lower grits, so give those steps more dwell time rather than more pressure. Keep water flow consistent to control stone dust and to keep the pad from loading up, and slow down near any filled vein, since the resin fill and surrounding stone can polish at slightly different rates if pressure is uneven.

A marble-bond diamond blade, softer than a granite-spec bond, is still the right call for Volakas: it cuts cleanly through a carbonate field without glazing over, while handling the harder mineral streaks in the vein material. Expect a slightly slower cut than on a soft calcitic white, since the dolomitic matrix is harder. Running a granite-rated blade on Volakas typically means slower cutting and a rougher finish along the kerf, not a longer-lasting edge.

A void solid enough to survive shipping can still open up after a slab sits under its own weight on the layout table for a few days, and catching it before the first cut saves the whole slab instead of just the cutoff.

Installing and Specifying Volakas for the Long Run

Installation is where a lot of Volakas fragility issues actually surface, not fabrication. A slab that survived cutting and polishing without incident can still crack during setting if the substrate or cabinet support is not flat and continuous under the full slab, particularly across any section with open or lightly filled veining. Shim the cabinet run to true level before the slab goes down, and never rely on the countertop itself to bridge a low spot in the base cabinetry.

Seam and adhesive choice matters more on a fragile marble than on granite, since the adhesive also has to accommodate slight thickness variation near a filled vein. Use a color-matched marble seam adhesive and check the seam for a flush, even surface before it cures fully, since sanding down a proud seam on Volakas removes material from an already thin working tolerance around any nearby vein fill.

On commercial specifications, note the target grade explicitly and require bundle photo approval before slabs are cut, especially on hospitality and retail projects where dozens of slabs need to read as one continuous material. A written grade specification with photo sign-off protects both parties when the finished job is compared against a small showroom sample.

When a client is deciding between Volakas and a more expensive Italian white, walk them through the actual trade-offs rather than just the price difference: Volakas offers strong supply consistency and a brighter overall field, while a Carrara-grade stone may offer a different vein character some designers specifically want. Helping a client understand what they are actually choosing between prevents dissatisfaction after installation.

Plan yield conservatively on Volakas jobs with heavy open veining, since a meaningful percentage of any bundle may need to be set aside as cutoffs if voids are found that cannot be filled reliably. Quoting a job assuming perfect yield from every slab is one of the more common ways a marble job loses money, and building a realistic waste factor into the estimate up front avoids that problem.

Building a relationship with a consistent Volakas supplier pays off over multiple jobs, since a supplier who understands a shop's grading expectations will set aside bundles that match rather than shipping whatever is next in the yard. For shops doing repeat commercial work, locking in that supplier is worth the effort.

Care, Cleaning, and Setting Client Expectations

Volakas needs the same sealing routine as any marble: a penetrating sealer applied before handoff, tested periodically with a water-bead check, and reapplied roughly once or twice a year depending on how heavily the surface is used. Sealing slows staining, it does not prevent etching, and clients need to hear that distinction clearly before choosing Volakas for a kitchen that will see wine, coffee, and citrus regularly.

Because Volakas has a bright, clean background, etching and dulling show up more visibly on a polished finish than on a busier, darker stone. Clients who want the brightest look need to understand that keeping it takes real upkeep, prompt spill cleanup and periodic resealing, and that some soft patina over years of use is normal for any marble, not a sign of bad installation.

A honed finish is worth recommending for heavy-use kitchen counters in Volakas for the same reason it works on Arabescato: a matte surface hides new etching far better than a glossy one does. For bathroom vanities and lower-traffic surfaces, a polished finish lets the vein color and background brightness show at full depth, and lower acid exposure makes the etching trade-off less of a concern.

Provide a written care sheet specifying pH-neutral stone cleaner only, since Volakas's bright white ground shows dulling from an acidic or abrasive cleaner faster than a darker stone would. Standard glass cleaners, vinegar-based solutions, and most bathroom disinfectants are inappropriate for sealed marble and will accelerate both etching and sealer breakdown before the recommended resealing interval.

Filled veins need a small amount of extra attention over the life of the installation. Inspect them during any routine maintenance visit or reseal, since a resin fill can shrink slightly or discolor faster than the surrounding stone under UV exposure near a window. Catching an aging fill early means a simple touch-up rather than the vein reopening into a gap that collects dirt and grime.

Set the long-term expectation at the point of sale, not after installation. Volakas resists acid a little longer than a calcitic white, but it is not acid-proof, and it will show wear over years of use the way any marble does; that wear is part of owning natural stone, not a fabrication defect. Clients who go in with accurate expectations about care and aging get far more satisfaction out of a Volakas installation than clients sold on it as a maintenance-free granite alternative.
