Film and television facilities are an unusual client for a stone fabricator because they contain two entirely different kinds of space with almost opposite requirements. On one side there are the permanent areas: lobbies, edit suites, green rooms, commissaries and post-production offices, which behave like ordinary high-end commercial interiors. On the other there are the working production spaces, where a surface may be installed for a six-week shoot, appear in close-up under intense light, absorb genuine abuse from crew and equipment, and then be removed entirely.

The mistake fabricators make is quoting both with the same assumptions. Set work and permanent work differ in tolerance, in fixing method, in finish selection and in how failure is judged. A surface that would be rejected in a lobby may be entirely correct on a set, and a specification that suits a set will disappoint in a space that has to look right for a decade. Understanding which conversation you are in changes the whole approach.

How a Camera Changes Finish Selection

The single largest technical difference in this sector is that surfaces are lit and photographed deliberately. Production lighting is far more intense and far more directional than architectural lighting, and it exposes surface characteristics that would never be noticed in a normal room. A polished stone face under a hard key light behaves like a mirror, and a mirror on a set reflects lighting rigs, boom arms and crew.

This is why honed, leathered and matte finishes dominate on-camera work. They scatter light rather than reflecting it specularly, which keeps the surface reading as material rather than as a light source. Where a polished surface is genuinely wanted for its appearance, the production team will usually manage it with polarising filters, flags and careful lighting angles, but they will want to know in advance that they are dealing with a reflective surface.

Colour behaviour under different light sources matters too. Stone that reads warm under tungsten and cool under daylight-balanced sources can complicate colour grading, and heavily veined material can be visually busy in a way that pulls attention in a wide shot. Set designers usually have strong views here, and the fabricator's contribution is accurate information about how a specific slab actually looks rather than a catalogue image.

Continuity is a requirement that has no equivalent in architectural work. A scene shot over several days must look identical in every take, which means a surface cannot visibly change during the shoot. Materials that water-spot, that show fingerprints prominently, or that darken temporarily when wiped will create continuity problems the art department has to manage shot by shot. Asking whether a surface will be seen across multiple shooting days is a useful question, because it moves the specification toward finishes that look the same at hour one and hour forty.

Texture depth is the other camera-specific variable. Aggressive textures such as deep bush-hammered or heavily flamed finishes read very strongly under raking light and can appear far more pronounced on camera than they do to the eye in the shop. Viewing a sample under a hard light at a low angle, which is easy to arrange, gives a much better prediction of on-camera appearance than viewing it flat under shop lighting.

Set Work: Speed, Reversibility and Weight

Set installations are temporary by design, and the fixing strategy has to reflect that. Adhesive systems chosen for permanence are the wrong choice when the surface has to come off a flat in three weeks without destroying either component. Mechanical fixing, cleats, and removable adhesive systems all have a place, and the decision should be made jointly with the construction coordinator rather than assumed.

Weight is a serious constraint on a soundstage. Set flats and scenic walls are built to be moved, and they are not engineered for the dead load of full-thickness stone. Thin stone, stone-faced panels and lightweight backed material exist precisely for applications like this, and proposing them early avoids a late redesign when the construction department calculates what the flat will actually carry.

Schedule compression is normal rather than exceptional. Production schedules move, and the window between a set being built and it being shot is frequently measured in days. Fabricators who can template quickly, fabricate off measured drawings rather than waiting for a physical template, and deliver to a stage door on a specific hour are valued disproportionately in this sector. Those who need a standard two-week lead time will find themselves designed out.

Damage tolerance on a set is judged differently from anywhere else. A panel only has to look correct within the frame, from the angles the camera will use, for the duration of the shoot. Edges that will never be seen do not need finishing, backs do not need polishing, and a repair that would be unacceptable in a kitchen may be entirely fine if it sits outside frame. Understanding that the standard is fitness for the shot rather than fitness for a lifetime lets a shop price this work sensibly instead of gold-plating it.

Reuse is a genuine consideration. Studios and scenic houses maintain stock of set elements, and a stone panel that survives removal cleanly can be used again on another production. Designing for removal, including planning where the fixings go and how the panel will be handled coming off, adds value that clients in this sector recognise immediately.

Acoustics and the Sound Department

Sound is the constraint most often overlooked by suppliers new to this sector, and it is the one most likely to generate a complaint. Hard, dense, flat surfaces reflect sound efficiently, and a room full of them develops a reverberant character that shows up in dialogue recordings as a hollow quality that is expensive to fix in post-production. Stone is among the hardest and densest surfaces a room can contain.

This does not rule stone out. It means the total area of hard surface in a sound-critical space is a design quantity that somebody is managing, and a fabricator who arrives proposing a large expanse of polished stone in an edit suite or a recording-adjacent room is affecting a variable outside their scope. The right move is to ask early whether the space is sound-critical and, if so, to expect the acoustic consultant to have views about surface areas.

Practical accommodations are usually straightforward. Breaking large flat runs with texture, keeping stone to areas where its acoustic contribution is manageable, and coordinating with the absorptive treatments the acoustician specifies elsewhere in the room all work. In many facilities stone is used generously in circulation and public areas and sparingly in recording-adjacent ones, which is a sensible division.

Impact noise deserves separate attention. Stone floors transmit footfall efficiently through structure, and in a facility where a stage is directly above or below an occupied space that transmission becomes a recording problem. Where stone flooring is specified near sound-critical spaces, the isolation detail beneath it is doing important work and should not be value-engineered away without consulting the sound design.

Permanent Areas and the Public Face

Studio lobbies and client-facing areas are frequently high-specification because they are seen by the people financing productions. This is conventional commercial stone work with the ordinary priorities of appearance, durability and maintainability, and it is where a fabricator's normal expertise applies directly.

Traffic patterns in these buildings are unusual, though. Crews move equipment carts, flight cases and lighting stands through circulation areas continuously, and the wear that results is closer to a loading dock than to an office lobby. Floor material selection should account for wheeled equipment loads and for the impact of cases being set down hard, which argues for durable materials and for corner protection at pinch points.

Commissary and catering areas have food service requirements like any commercial kitchen, with the additional characteristic that they operate at intense peaks around meal breaks and are idle between them. Dense, sealed, easily sanitised surfaces with coved detailing at wall junctions serve well here, and the specification logic is the same as for any commercial food service space.

Talent-facing spaces such as green rooms and dressing areas sit between hospitality and commercial in their requirements. Comfort and appearance carry more weight than in back-of-house areas, radiused edges and warm materials suit the setting, and the surfaces get significant hands-on use. This is a place where stone performs very well and where the investment is visible.

Working With Production Schedules

Establish who holds the schedule and how changes are communicated. Production schedules are managed centrally and they move for reasons entirely unrelated to construction, so a fabricator waiting for a confirmed date from a general contractor may be reading a document that is already superseded.

Build float into the fabrication programme rather than into the installation date. The installation date in this sector is frequently immovable because a crew is booked to shoot on it, so any slack in the programme has to sit upstream. Shops that understand this and plan accordingly develop long relationships in the sector.

Access, Security and Site Conditions

Studio lots are controlled-access facilities with vehicle restrictions, escort requirements and confidentiality expectations. Plan delivery logistics well in advance, confirm what documentation your crew needs to get on site, and expect that photography on the lot may be restricted, which affects the site record most shops routinely keep.

Confirm working hours before quoting. Wet cutting and powered tools near an active stage may be prohibited during shooting hours entirely, which can push installation into nights or weekends. Discovering that constraint after the quote has been accepted turns a profitable job into an unprofitable one.

Building a Practice in This Sector

The commercial character of studio work rewards flexibility more than volume. Jobs are often smaller than comparable commercial work, timelines are shorter, and specifications change late. Shops that treat these as problems tend to price themselves out; shops that treat them as the operating conditions of the sector and build processes around them find the work steady and the relationships durable.

Relationships matter more than tenders here. Production designers, art directors, construction coordinators and scenic houses work with the same suppliers repeatedly because reliability under schedule pressure is worth more to them than a lower unit price. A single well-executed job for a scenic house frequently generates years of follow-on work.

Documentation habits should adapt to the environment. Where photography is restricted, keep written records of what was installed, how it was fixed and where. Where panels are designed for reuse, label them and provide a simple removal guide, because the person taking the panel down in eight months will not be the person who watched it go up.

Finally, be realistic about which parts of this sector suit your shop. Fast-turnaround set work suits a shop with spare capacity and flexible scheduling. Permanent high-specification interiors suit a shop with strong architectural credentials. Very few shops are equally good at both, and choosing deliberately produces better outcomes than trying to serve every request that comes through the door.
