Shungite is a genuinely unusual material. It is a carbon-rich rock, in its purest form closer to a mineraloid than to a conventional stone, and it comes overwhelmingly from a single district: the Shunga area of Karelia in northwestern Russia, near Lake Onega. The host rocks are Lower Proterozoic in age, dated to roughly two to 2.1 billion years, and they contain quantities of elemental carbon that have no close parallel in the geological record. For a stone shop, that carbon content is not trivia; it governs almost everything about how the material cuts, polishes, wears and behaves in a finished installation.

Commercial shungite is classified by how much carbon it contains, and the grades behave so differently that treating them as one material is a mistake. The highest grade, often marketed as elite or noble shungite, runs above roughly ninety-eight percent carbon and appears as a bright, almost metallic silver-black. Below that sit type II material at roughly thirty-five to eighty percent carbon, type III at around twenty to thirty-five percent, and type IV below twenty percent. The lower grades are the ones that reach the market as slabs and tiles; the elite grade is essentially a collector and jewellery material.

Grades, Hardness and Structural Behaviour

Reported hardness varies with grade, which is exactly what you would expect from a rock whose composition ranges from mostly carbon to mostly silicate. Primary literature gives a figure of about 3.5 for glassy shungite carbon, while secondary sources report a broader band of roughly 3.5 to 4.5 depending on carbon content and mineral impurities, and high-carbon elite material has been described as reaching up to about 5.5 and capable of scratching glass. Take the widest range and note that hardness varies by grade. In practical terms, treat any shungite slab as a soft stone until a scratch test on an offcut tells you otherwise.

A Mohs value in the threes and fours places the material below common household abrasives. Sand tracked across a shungite floor will scratch it. A ceramic mug dragged across a shungite tabletop will mark it. This is not a defect; it is a property, and it is the same property that makes soapstone a beloved material in the right setting. The failure mode is a client who was sold a black surface and expected granite performance.

Structurally, the lower-carbon types behave like a fine-grained dark shale or slate: they are reasonably tough in compression, considerably weaker in bending, and prone to splitting along bedding where bedding is developed. High-carbon material is softer and more homogeneous but also more friable at edges. Neither is a good candidate for a long unsupported overhang, and both benefit from continuous substrate support in a horizontal application.

Density is lower than most fabricators expect from a black stone, because carbon is light. A shungite panel will feel noticeably less heavy than an equivalently sized granite panel, which is an advantage for wall applications and a warning sign if a supplier is selling something suspiciously heavy under the shungite name.

Cutting, Shaping and Finishing

Blade and bond selection

Soft stone wants a hard bond. A blade formulated for granite will hold its diamond too long on a material this soft only if the bond is hard enough to resist the low abrasive load; conversely a soft-bond blade will wear away rapidly and expensively. The practical starting point is a blade rated for soft to medium stone such as marble or limestone, run wet, with a moderate feed. Watch for loading rather than glazing, because carbon-rich swarf can pack into the gullets.

Dust is the dominant hazard

Cutting shungite produces a fine black dust that carries both a nuisance and, in the lower-carbon grades, a genuine respirable silica component from the mineral fraction. The construction standard for respirable crystalline silica sets a permissible exposure limit of 50 micrograms per cubic metre as an eight-hour time-weighted average with an action level of 25 micrograms per cubic metre, and dry work on a silicate-bearing shungite can approach those figures quickly. Wet cut wherever possible, and use shrouded tools with rated vacuum extraction where dry work is unavoidable.

The dust also stains

Carbon black is a pigment. Slurry from shungite will mark porous adjacent surfaces, grout, unsealed concrete and clothing, and it does so far more persistently than granite slurry. Mask adjacent finishes before any on-site cutting, keep a dedicated set of pads and a dedicated water tray if the shop processes light-coloured material on the same equipment, and flush the machine thoroughly afterwards.

Polishing to a genuine gloss

High-carbon shungite polishes to a remarkable near-mirror finish, and it does so with less effort than granite because the material is soft. The risk runs the other way: excessive pressure or a too-coarse start will dish the surface and round the edges before the operator notices. Begin at a finer grit than instinct suggests, keep pressure light, keep the surface flooded, and step through the sequence without skipping. Lower-carbon grades generally take a satin or honed finish more gracefully than a full polish.

Run a scratch test and a water absorption check on an offcut from every shipment before you quote a finish. Shungite grade varies between lots even from the same supplier, and a slab that polishes beautifully from one delivery can refuse to take gloss from the next because the carbon fraction has changed.

Specifying Shungite Responsibly

A great deal of the marketing around this stone concerns claimed health and electromagnetic effects. Those claims are not supported by the sort of evidence a fabricator should be repeating to a client, and a shop that echoes them takes on a liability it has no reason to accept. Sell the material on what is demonstrable: an unusual geological origin, an exceptionally deep black, a distinctive lustre at high polish, and a lightness in the hand that black granites cannot match.

Interior vertical applications are the sweet spot. Feature walls, fireplace surrounds, reception desk fronts, bar fronts and cabinet panels all keep the material away from abrasion while showing off the colour and lustre. In these positions the softness is irrelevant and the visual payoff is high.

Horizontal use requires a conversation. A shungite tabletop in a residential study will develop a patina of fine scratches within a year and many clients find that attractive, in the same way that soapstone owners accept and even seek out its softness. A shungite bar top in a commercial venue will look worn within months and the client will be unhappy. The distinguishing factor is not the room; it is whether the owner has agreed in advance to accept a living surface.

Exterior use should generally be avoided in freeze-thaw climates. The material's porosity varies by grade, the carbon fraction offers no frost resistance, and any bedding weakness will exploit a wet-freeze cycle. Where an exterior application is requested, insist on a freeze-thaw durability test on the actual lot rather than relying on a general assurance.

Substitution risk is worth naming explicitly. Because genuine Karelian shungite commands a premium, a range of unrelated black materials circulate under the name, including basalt, black slate, anthracite-bearing shale and dyed composites. A simple check is weight combined with a streak test: shungite is light for its size and leaves a black streak on an unglazed tile. Where the purchase is significant, ask for provenance documentation.

Sealing, Cleaning and Living With the Material

Shungite is not a carbonate, so it does not etch in the way that marble and limestone do when they meet acid. What it does do is absorb oils and hold fingerprints on a high-polish surface, and the lower-carbon grades can be surprisingly porous. A penetrating impregnator formulated for dense dark stone is usually appropriate, applied thinly and buffed off completely, but every product should be tested on an offcut because carbon-rich surfaces sometimes react unpredictably to solvent carriers.

Routine cleaning wants a pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth. Abrasive creams, scouring pads and general-purpose kitchen sprays will all dull a polished shungite surface faster than they would dull granite, simply because the substrate is softer. Where a client insists on a heavy-duty cleaner, direct them to a honed finish instead, which hides wear far better than a polish does.

Minor scratches can often be worked out by hand with a fine abrasive and patience, which is a genuine advantage over harder stones. Because the material is soft, a competent fabricator can refinish a small area on site with hand pads and a light polish, and the repair blends more readily than it would on granite. Give the client a small offcut and a fine hand pad at handover so they can experiment safely.

Adhesive joints in shungite need colour matching to a true black rather than to a grey-black, and knife-grade consistency for vertical work. Because the stone is soft, take care that the joint compound is not harder than the surrounding material, or the seam will stand slightly proud after any refinishing pass. Testing the tint and hardness on offcuts before assembling the visible work avoids that.

Over a long service life, expect a well-specified shungite installation to darken slightly and develop a soft depth of surface that many owners prefer to its as-installed condition. The materials that fail are the ones placed where they were always going to be abraded. Get the placement right and this is a satisfying, distinctive and surprisingly manageable stone; get it wrong and no amount of sealer will rescue it.

Transport and storage need a little more thought than a comparable granite shipment. Because the material is soft and the edges of thin slabs are friable, shungite arrives best on an A-frame with generous soft separation between pieces rather than stacked flat with cardboard interleaving. Corner protection matters disproportionately: a knock that would leave a granite corner unmarked will take a visible flake out of a shungite panel, and the flake will be pale against the black surface and therefore highly conspicuous.

Template and layout practice should assume the material is precious rather than plentiful. Nest the layout tightly, plan the cutting sequence so that the largest and most visible pieces come off the best area of the slab first, and keep the offcuts organised by lot rather than throwing them into a general remnant rack. Karelian supply is concentrated in one district and subject to the same logistical and regulatory variability as any single-source material, so a lot that arrives today may not be repeatable next quarter.

Fixing methods for vertical work deserve specific attention. Mechanical fixings that rely on a bearing surface within the stone need generous edge distance in a material this soft, and an undercut anchor system designed for granite may simply crush its cone in shungite. Adhesive fixing to a rigid substrate, with mechanical safety restraint, is usually the more sensible route for panels, and any fixing scheme above head height should be reviewed by an engineer rather than decided at the bench.

Where shungite meets other materials, plan the junction. A soft black stone abutting a hard light stone will wear at different rates and will show any differential movement at the joint. Metal reveals, shadow gaps and deliberate setbacks all handle this more gracefully than a butt joint, and they also give the installer somewhere to absorb the small dimensional inconsistencies that hand-finished soft stone inevitably carries.

Finally, document the finish as delivered. Photograph the completed installation under the intended lighting on the day of handover, and keep the image with the job file. Because this material is expected to change with use, having an agreed record of its starting condition turns a later conversation about wear into a factual discussion rather than a disagreement about what the surface looked like when it was new.
