Green schist arrives in the yard looking like a bargain. The colour is deep and even, the surface has a satin glitter that photographs beautifully, and the price per square foot undercuts anything comparable in granite. Then somebody drags a thumbnail across the face and leaves a line in it. Chlorite schist is a genuinely useful architectural stone, but it belongs to a different category from the hard silicate slabs most shops handle daily, and treating it as a soft granite is how fabricators lose money on it.

The whole behaviour of the material traces back to one mineral group sitting near the bottom of the hardness scale, arranged into sheets that all lie the same way. Everything else — how it saws, why it clogs pads instead of abrading them, why it will never take a mirror gloss, why an unsupported slab folds on the forklift — follows from those two facts. Get them straight before quoting, and the material becomes predictable. Ignore them and it will find every weakness in your process at once.

Chlorite: A Mineral at the Soft End of the Scale

Chlorite is not a single mineral but a group of hydrous phyllosilicates. It measures roughly 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale, with a specific gravity between 2.6 and 3.3 depending on iron content, a vitreous to pearly lustre, and a colour that runs from pale green through to greenish-black. It has perfect basal cleavage in one direction and splits into thin flakes that are flexible but not elastic: bend one and it stays bent rather than springing back.

That hardness figure is worth translating into shop terms. On the standard field scale a fingernail is about 2.5 and a copper coin about 3.5, so chlorite is right at the boundary where a fingernail will mark it. A steel knife or a glass plate sits near 5.5, comfortably above anything a chlorite-dominated surface can resist. Grit tracked in on a shoe, a ceramic plate slid across a counter, a set of keys dropped on the face — all of them are harder than the mineral and all of them leave a mark.

Chlorite also has a distinctly greasy or soapy feel, which is a genuine diagnostic rather than folklore. The soft, platy structure means the surface shears under light pressure and the fine flakes act as a lubricant against your skin. That same behaviour is what happens at the abrasive: instead of the mineral fracturing and releasing swarf, it smears.

Geologically, chlorite marks the lowest rung of the classic Barrovian sequence. George Barrow's original index-mineral zones run chlorite, biotite, garnet, staurolite, kyanite and sillimanite from lowest grade to highest, and the chlorite zone is where pelitic rocks are still slates and phyllites carrying chlorite, muscovite, quartz and albite. It falls within greenschist facies, typically cited around 300 to 450 °C and pressures of roughly 1 to 4 kilobars, varying by configuration. In short, this rock never got hot enough or deep enough to grow the hard index minerals that make a gneiss durable.

Schist as a rock type spans Mohs 3 to 7 depending on which mineral dominates. A quartz- and garnet-rich schist behaves close to a granite. A chlorite-dominated schist behaves closer to soapstone. The trade names do not distinguish between them, so the identification has to happen at the slab.

Related green stones get confused with it constantly. Soapstone is talc-dominated and softer still, and the hardest soapstones only reach about 3 to 4; anything harder than that is more likely serpentinite, which runs roughly 2.5 to 5.5 and is noticeably less easily scratched. The quick separator in the yard is fabric: chlorite schist and chlorite phyllite show clear foliation and a glittery satin sheen, while soapstone is massive and uniformly soapy without a strong directional grain.

What Soft and Foliated Means on the Shop Floor

Foliation is the second half of the problem. In a schist the platy minerals are aligned into continuous planes, and a plane of aligned soft flakes is a plane of weakness running the full length of the slab. The stone wants to split along schistosity, and it will do so at loads far below what the same thickness of granite tolerates. Handling damage on this material is almost always a clean parting along the fabric rather than a random fracture.

Tooling behaves counter-intuitively. Hard stone abrades diamond and keeps a bond exposing fresh grit; chlorite does the opposite. Soft platy material packs into the pad's pores and the blade's gullets, glazes the working face, and turns an abrasive into a burnisher. The symptom is a tool that stops cutting while looking perfectly serviceable, followed by heat, smearing and a surface that gets shinier without getting flatter.

Expect a hard polish to be off the table. A mirror gloss on granite comes from progressively finer scratches in minerals hard enough to hold a fine facet. Chlorite cannot hold that surface; push it with fine grits and pressure and you produce a soft sheen that scuffs the first time anything touches it. Honed, brushed and natural-cleft finishes are the honest options, and they are also the ones that age well on this material.

Cutting, Support and Edge Detail

Cut direction against the schistosity

Mark the schistosity direction on every slab before it moves. Cutting parallel to the foliation runs the blade along the sheets and gives the cleanest result, but it also leaves the offcut and the workpiece both split-prone along the same plane. Cutting across the foliation is mechanically safer for the finished piece and harder on the cut face: the blade repeatedly enters and leaves sheet edges, and the exit side lifts and frays unless it is supported.

Back the exit side with a sacrificial board taped or clamped tight to the stone, and slow the feed at entry and exit. Water should be generous, not because the material generates much heat but because it flushes the soft fines that would otherwise pack the segment. Watch for slurry that turns pasty rather than milky; that is the material glazing the blade and it means slowing down and increasing flow.

Backing, lamination and support

Assume the slab needs help. Full-sheet mesh or fibreglass backing bonded to the reverse is standard practice on soft foliated stone and should be priced in rather than debated. For vertical panels and any piece spanning an opening, a rigid substrate — an aluminium honeycomb panel or a bonded backer board — turns a fragile sheet into a manageable one, and lets you use a thinner slab than the stone could carry alone.

Where a top has to sit on cabinetry, continuous support beats point support. Plywood or a full sub-deck under the whole footprint spreads load across the fabric instead of concentrating it on a few rails, and it stops the slow sag that soft foliated stone develops over an unsupported span. Rod any run beside a cutout, and keep every internal corner generously radiused.

Edge profiles that survive

Keep edges blunt and simple. An eased square, a small radius or a shallow chamfer removes the sharp arris that would otherwise crumble under everyday contact. Bullnose profiles work reasonably because they present a continuously curved face with no fragile corner. What does not work is anything with a thin, undercut or fluted element: a soft platy stone cannot support a delicate fillet, and the first knock takes it off.

A laminated or mitred build-up edge is often the better answer than a thick slab. It gives the visual weight the design wants without the handling mass, and the lamination itself adds stiffness along the front where damage is most likely. Cut the mitre carefully, keep the glue line tight, and support the whole assembly while the adhesive cures.

Handling and transport

More chlorite schist is lost between the rack and the van than on the saw. Keep slabs vertical on a well-padded A-frame, never leaned at a shallow angle, and never flat-stacked without full-length support. Carry finished pieces on edge with the foliation running along the length, use a full-length frame or lifting bar rather than clamps alone, and brief every helper before the lift rather than during it.

Pro Tip: Before quoting a green schist, run a scratch bracket on an offcut: fingernail (about 2.5), copper coin (about 3.5), steel blade (about 5.5). If a fingernail marks the face, you are working a chlorite-dominated stone and the job needs backing, blunt edges, a honed finish and a written limitation on where it can be installed. Put that test result in the file — it is the evidence behind every specification decision that follows.

Honing Sequence and Surface Development

Coarse-to-fine progression matters more on soft stone than on hard stone, and for a reason that catches people out. On granite, a slightly rushed sequence leaves scratches that the next grit eventually removes. On chlorite schist, a coarse scratch is deep, the mineral smears rather than fracturing, and a fine pad brought in too early polishes the smeared material over the top of the scratch instead of cutting it away. The defect is hidden until the surface is wetted or the light changes.

Work each grit until the previous pattern is genuinely gone, checked wet and in raking light, then move up a single step. Use light pressure and constant movement; pressure does not speed the cut on a mineral this soft, it just deepens the smear and heats the pad. Dress or rinse pads far more often than you would on granite, because loading is the default state rather than an occasional problem.

Keep water flowing throughout. A dry or barely damp pass on chlorite generates a burnished skin that looks like progress and is actually a thin glazed layer sitting over unresolved scratching. If a pad starts to squeal or the surface begins to shine before the grit sequence justifies it, stop, flush everything, and drop back.

Sealing a soft stone is about staining and handling, not about hardness. An impregnating sealer does not make chlorite scratch-resistant and should never be sold as though it does. What it does is reduce absorption of oils and coloured liquids into a stone that has plenty of open fabric to draw them in. Test on an offcut first, because enhancing sealers can darken foliated stone unevenly, following the bands.

Where Chlorite Schist Belongs, and Where It Does Not

The material is at its best where it is seen and rarely touched. Vertical feature walls and cladding are the natural home: the schistosity glitters under grazing light, nothing abrades the surface, and the backing that makes installation safe is invisible. Fireplace surrounds, hearth facings, reception feature panels, bar fronts and low-traffic accent flooring all work when the stone is specified with a honed or cleft finish and detailed with blunt edges.

On a fireplace, keep it as a surround and facing rather than a firebox lining or a direct-contact heat surface. Chlorite is a hydrous mineral group, and hydrous phyllosilicates are not the material to place against sustained high heat. Follow the appliance manufacturer's clearance requirements and local code rather than any general assumption about stone, and use a rated non-combustible substrate behind the facing.

Where it does not belong is easier to state. A busy kitchen work surface will be scratched within days by cookware, ceramics and grit, and no sealer changes that. Commercial floors, retail entrances, corridors and any circulation route with foot traffic will polish, scuff and wear channels along the foliation. Bathroom vanity tops with heavy cosmetic use, sills that take repeated impact, and outdoor paving exposed to freeze-thaw all belong to harder stone.

Being direct about this at the quoting stage is a commercial advantage, not a lost sale. Clients who fall for the colour are usually happy to move the stone to a wall and put something harder on the counter, provided somebody explains the trade-off before the deposit is taken. A written note on the quote — what the finish is, where it is suitable, what will mark it — protects the shop and the relationship at once.

Maintenance instructions should be as plain as the specification. Dust dry or wipe with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft cloth. Keep abrasive creams, scouring pads and acidic bathroom sprays away from it entirely. Expect a honed surface to develop a patina, treat that as the material behaving normally, and plan on occasional localised re-honing rather than a single permanent finish.
