- Select the grit for the stage of work — coarser grits for stock removal, finer grits for finishing.
- For wet sanding, keep the work surface and sheet wet with water to reduce heat and clear debris; for dry sanding, keep the surface free of dust between passes.
- Back the sheet with a hand sanding block or load it into a hand-held sander as the job requires.
- Work in overlapping passes, rinsing or tapping out loaded grit as needed.
- Step down through the grit sequence in order, cleaning the surface between steps.
- Discard a sheet once the grain is worn or clogged rather than continuing on a dull sheet.
Wear appropriate PPE. Follow manufacturer instructions and safety regulations.
