Theft in a fabrication shop almost never looks like a break-in. A stone shop is an unusually attractive target and most owners underrate it. Diamond tooling is the standout target because the value-to-bulk ratio is extreme. Unlike a saw or a CNC, tooling usually has no serial plate, no title, and a busy secondhand market where nobody asks questions. Consumables behave the same way: resin cartridges, colour kits, pads and blades disappear in small quantities that are hard to separate from normal usage unless somebody is counting.
Cordless tools are the second category, because they are portable, universally useful, and carry batteries and chargers worth taking on their own. Angle grinders, polishers, routers and impact drivers all move easily. Hand tools with a specific trade value follow: seam setters, vacuum lifters, suction cups, clamps, levels and the cartridge guns every installer carries. Serial numbers are what let police enter an item into national stolen article records, what let an insurer process a claim without argument, and what let a buyer match a recovered item back to you. Without them a stolen grinder is generically identical to every other grinder of that model in the state.
Marking makes an item less attractive and more traceable. Engraving the shop name or an asset code into a tool housing, deep enough that grinding it off ruins the tool, is crude and effective. Ultraviolet marking pens leave an invisible identifier that shows under a blacklight and works on surfaces you do not want to deface. Use two methods on high-value items, one visible as a deterrent and one hidden for identification, because a thief who removes the obvious mark usually assumes it was the only one.

A tool crib only works if it is faster to sign a tool out than to sneak it out. Cage the high-value tooling, put one person in charge per shift, and make the sign-out a ten-second action: name, item, date, on a clipboard or a phone. The point is not surveillance. Physical security is layered and each layer buys time. Fencing that is hard to cut and gates that are actually locked deter opportunists. Match the control to how the asset is actually used, not to what it is worth on paper.
Alarm monitoring earns the subscription in a shop with a yard, but only if somebody has decided in advance what happens when it trips. An alarm that dials a centre which calls an owner who does not answer at two in the morning is a noise generator. Agree the call list, keep it current as staff change, and make sure someone on it can respond or authorise a police dispatch. Verified systems, where an operator can view camera footage before dispatching, draw a faster response in many jurisdictions than an unverified audible alarm.
Outdoor slab racks deserve specific thought because they are the hardest thing to secure and the most dangerous thing to have interfered with. Racks near a fence line can be reached, and someone levering a slab out of a bundle in the dark is creating a serious hazard as well as a loss. Keep the highest-value material inside, hold outdoor racks away from the perimeter with a lit corridor around them, and use straps or chains that make removing a single piece an obviously slow and noisy job.
Key control quietly undermines otherwise good programmes. Keys get copied, staff leave with them, gate codes get shared with a delivery driver and never changed, and after five years nobody knows how many people can open the building. Move to a credentialed system where you can revoke one person's access without rekeying the site, keep a written list of who holds what, and change the yard code on a schedule rather than only after an incident. That closes the most common route in, which is not forced entry at all.

Vehicles, Jobsites and the Install Crew
The install van is the most exposed asset the shop owns, because it parks overnight on residential streets, in hotel lots on out-of-town jobs, and on sites where the general contractor's security ends at the fence. Interior lockboxes bolted through the floor pan make a quick raid unproductive, because the thief has to defeat a second barrier in the dark with a limited window. Shatter-resistant film on van glass, hardened lock shields and removing exterior branding all reduce the odds that your vehicle is the one selected.
Crew habits matter more than hardware. Tools do not stay in the van overnight when the job is in an unsecured area; they come inside. Nothing valuable is visible through a window. The van parks with cargo doors against a wall or another vehicle wherever possible. Load-out and load-in are inventoried against a fixed kit list, so the crew knows before leaving the site whether something is missing rather than discovering it two days later when nobody can say where it was last seen.
Long-running jobs create a different exposure. On multi-week commercial installs the temptation is to leave a rolling cart of tooling on site, and that cart is available to every other trade in the building. If tooling has to stay, get a lockable gang box, chain it to something structural, and confirm with the general contractor what site security exists and who carries the liability. Get that answer in writing before the tools arrive, because the conversation after a loss is very different from the one before it.
Tracking devices have become cheap enough to be routine on anything expensive. Consumer Bluetooth tags are useful for short-range location and for the common case of a tool simply lost in the shop, but they depend on a nearby phone in the tag network and are easy to find and discard. Cellular or satellite trackers with their own power source are the right choice for vehicles, forklifts and high-value equipment, because they report position independently. Hide the unit properly, keep the account current, and know how to pull a location before you need it at midnight.
Be clear about what a tracker is for. It is an aid to recovery through law enforcement, not a licence to retrieve your property yourself. Confronting someone over a stolen grinder is how a property loss becomes an injury. Provide the location data to police and let them act on it. Shops that have recovered equipment successfully almost always did so by handing good information to an officer who could use it, not by driving to an address at night.
Insurance, Recovery and Keeping the Programme Honest
Insurance for tools and equipment is not automatic under a general property policy, and many owners find the gap at the worst moment. Tools in transit and tools at a jobsite usually need inland marine or contractors equipment coverage rather than the building policy, and scheduled versus blanket coverage changes what you are paid for a specific item. Review the schedule annually against the asset register, because a policy written when the shop had two vans and one saw does not cover what you own now.

The programme needs a maintenance rhythm or it decays. Reconcile the tool register quarterly, walk the perimeter every few months looking for cut fence, dead lights and camera views that have grown over, and confirm the recorder is actually recording. Update the call list when staff change and the gate code when someone leaves. Add new purchases to the register at receiving rather than in a catch-up session a year later, because an out-of-date register is worse than none since it creates false confidence.
Handle the people side fairly and openly. Explain to the crew why the register exists and what it protects, which is their kit and their jobs as much as the owner's balance sheet. Run reference and background checks consistently for everyone in a given role rather than selectively, follow the legal requirements in your jurisdiction, and keep results confidential. A shop where controls are visible, uniform and unemotional gets the security benefit without the morale cost, and crews usually tighten things further on their own.
