Leathered, antiqued and brushed finishes have moved from a specialty request to a standard option, and the reason is practical as much as aesthetic. A textured surface hides fingerprints, water spots and light scratching in a way a mirror polish cannot, and it reads as tactile and considered in a market where high-gloss stone has become ordinary. What clients ask for by pointing at a sample, however, is produced by a specific process, and the quality of the result depends almost entirely on whether that process was followed as a sequence or attempted in a single step.

The Tenax Airflex brush is the refining element of that sequence. It is part of the Tenax Filiflex and Airflex stone-texturing brush system, and its role is to soften the texture set by coarser Filiflex brushes while adding colour depth and a soft antique look. How Brush Texturing Works

A texturing brush is an abrasive tool with a fundamentally different geometry from a polishing pad. Instead of a continuous flat working face, it presents an array of flexible bristles with abrasive embedded in them. Those bristles conform to the surface, and because they are flexible they preferentially remove the softer mineral constituents while riding over the harder ones.

On a multi-mineral stone such as granite, that selective removal is what creates the characteristic leathered texture: the softer feldspars and micas are cut back slightly while the quartz stands proud, producing a fine undulation that follows the natural mineral structure of the stone rather than being imposed on it. This is why a brushed granite looks like the stone and a mechanically embossed surface does not.

Diamond-embedded bristle construction is what makes the tool durable enough for production use. The abrasive is held within the bristle material rather than coated on its surface, so as the bristle wears the abrasive continues to be exposed. A brush built this way holds its cutting character over a working life measured in useful square footage rather than in a few pieces.

Grit works the same way it does in any abrasive sequence, but the effect on a brush is textural rather than purely a matter of scratch depth. A coarse brush establishes the depth and character of the undulation; a finer brush reduces the sharpness of that texture without removing it, leaving a surface that is still tactile but no longer rough to the touch.

Where the Airflex Sits in the Sequence

The system is designed as a pair of stages. Filiflex brushes are the coarser element that establishes the texture, and the Airflex softens what they have set while adding colour depth and a soft antique appearance. Attempting to reach a finished leathered surface with the refining brush alone will not work, because there is no established texture for it to refine; attempting to stop after the coarse stage leaves a surface that is textured but harsh.

The colour depth effect is worth understanding because it is the part clients respond to. A coarse texture scatters light in all directions and reads as flat and pale. Softening that texture allows more specular reflection from the peaks while the valleys stay dark, and the result is a surface with visible depth in which the stone's own colour reappears. It is the difference between a brushed black granite that looks grey and one that looks black with life in it.

Choosing Among 120, 220 and 300

The Airflex is offered in 120, 220 and 300 grit, and the choice among them is a choice about how far to refine. A 120 brush takes the sharpest edge off a coarse texture while leaving a pronounced tactile surface. A 300 brush produces a much softer, more closed texture approaching a honed feel with residual undulation. The 220 sits between them and is the common starting point for a general leathered finish.

On many jobs the correct answer is to run more than one. Stepping from 120 to 220 to 300 gives progressively more control over the final character than jumping straight to the finest brush, in exactly the way a polishing sequence works. Where production volume makes that impractical, choosing the single grit that matches the approved sample and validating it on scrap is the pragmatic alternative.

Material Differences

The brush is rated across a wide range of stones, and they do not all respond identically. Hard, multi-mineral stones such as granite and quartzite develop pronounced texture because of the hardness contrast between their minerals. Uniform carbonate stones such as many marbles and limestones have less internal hardness variation, so the texture is subtler and more uniform. Slate and sandstone, which are already directional, respond in ways that follow their own structure.

This means a sample approved on one material does not predict the result on another. Producing a sample on the actual slab, from the actual bundle, is the only reliable way to agree a finish with a client.

Spotlight:

The Airflex is a refining tool, not a standalone one, and that single fact explains most disappointing brushed finishes. A shop that buys one brush, runs it over a polished slab and concludes that leathering does not look like the sample has skipped the stage that creates the texture in the first place. Buy the system, run it as a sequence, and the sample becomes reproducible.

Edges, Profiles and Awkward Areas

A 5 inch brush on a flat deck is straightforward. The difficulty is everything else: the eased edge, the underside of an overhang, the return at a mitre, the inside corner of an L-shaped run, and the perimeter of a sink cutout. Those areas receive less brush contact than the field, and a piece finished without attention to them shows a visibly different texture around its edges, which is precisely where the client puts their hand.

Work the edges first, before the field, and work them by hand or with the machine held at a controlled angle so the bristles reach the profile. Doing edges last invites the operator to blend them into a field that is already finished, and any correction at that stage disturbs the field texture. Establishing the edge and then bringing the field to meet it produces a more uniform result.

Cutout perimeters deserve a dedicated pass. A sink cutout in a leathered top has an exposed edge that is handled constantly, and a texture that stops short of it is immediately noticeable. A smaller brush, or careful hand work with the same grit, keeps the character consistent right to the arris.

Technique and Consistency

Keep the brush moving and keep it flat. Dwelling in one place cuts a depression that will be visible under raking light no matter how well the rest of the surface is finished, and tilting the tool concentrates the work on one side of the brush, producing an uneven texture and wearing the tool asymmetrically.

Use overlapping passes in a consistent direction, then a second set of passes at right angles to the first. Working in one direction only leaves a directional grain that is obvious on a large surface; crossing the passes produces a texture that reads as uniform from any viewing angle.

Control the pressure. Bristle brushes work by conforming to the surface, and excess pressure collapses the bristles rather than increasing the cutting rate. The result is faster tool wear and less texture, which is the opposite of what the operator was trying to achieve. Light, consistent pressure with the weight of the machine doing the work gives the best and most repeatable result.

Run wet where the machine and the material allow. Water suppresses dust at the source, which matters because texturing granite and quartz generates respirable crystalline silica, and it flushes the removed material away from the bristles so the brush keeps cutting rather than loading.

Establish and record the parameters. Once a combination of grit sequence, speed, pressure and pass pattern produces the approved sample, write it down. Brushed finishes are more operator-dependent than polished ones, and a written standard is what makes the second island match the first.

Life, Storage and Practical Notes

Cost tracking on brushes follows the same logic as any other consumable. Record the square footage each brush produces before it is retired on finish quality, and note the material it worked, because a brush run mostly on quartzite will not last as long as one run mostly on marble. Over a year that record turns a brushed-finish surcharge from a guess into a figure the shop can defend to a client who asks why the leathered option costs more.

Sample libraries repay the effort of building them. A rack of small finished pieces, each labelled with the material, the brush grits used, the pass pattern and whether a sealer or enhancer was applied, lets a client choose from something real and lets the shop reproduce it exactly. It also settles the recurring argument about whether a finish was delivered as approved, because the approved article is on a shelf with a label on it.

Sealing behaves differently on a textured surface, and it should be part of the finish specification rather than an afterthought. A brushed or leathered face has more surface area and more open porosity than a polished one from the same slab, so it absorbs more readily and generally needs sealer where the polished equivalent might not. Test on an offcut finished to the same texture, not on a polished sample.

Enhancing sealers interact strongly with texture. Because a brushed surface already deepens colour by trapping light in its valleys, an enhancer applied on top can push the result considerably darker than the client expected from the approved sample. Where an enhancer is specified, produce the sample with the enhancer already applied so what is approved is what will be delivered.

Inspect the bristles rather than the overall appearance. A brush reaching the end of its life shows shortened, splayed or missing bristles, and the effect on the finish is a texture that becomes progressively shallower. Because that change is gradual, it is easy to miss until someone compares a recent piece against an earlier one.

Retire on finish quality, not on visible wear. A brush that no longer produces the approved texture has stopped doing its job even if it still looks serviceable, and running it on is a false economy paid for in rework.

Store brushes hanging or in a rack, not stacked under other tools. Bristles that have been compressed under weight take a set and do not recover, which changes how the tool cuts.

Check the mount before every use. A snail-lock mount that has been cross-threaded or damaged will not seat concentrically, and a brush running out of true produces exactly the uneven texture the operator is trying to avoid. Clean the mount and the machine thread of slurry before fitting.

Match the machine to the tool. Brushes are designed to run within a speed range, and a machine running far above it will wear the bristles rapidly and can throw material. The manufacturer's guidance, and appropriate personal protective equipment, apply here as with any powered abrasive.
