Fabrication is the part fabricators talk about, but the part the customer remembers is what the crew did to the house. A stone install walks two or three people carrying several hundred pounds of unforgiving material through finished spaces somebody has just paid to have floored, painted and trimmed. Three centimetre slabs run roughly seventeen to twenty-two pounds per square foot depending on configuration and stone density, so a single island top is a heavy, rigid, sharp-cornered object travelling past new casework at hip height. Protection is not housekeeping. It is damage control planned before the truck leaves the shop.
It is also the cheapest insurance available to an installation business. A roll of floor board, a set of corner guards and twenty minutes of setup cost a fraction of one refinished floor, one repainted stairwell, or one long argument with a general contractor about who chipped the entry tile. On occupied commercial work the stakes climb further, because you are also protecting a tenant's ability to keep trading while you work. What follows covers the walkthrough, the protection envelope, dust and slurry containment, and what belongs in the crew's kit.
The Pre-Install Walkthrough and Photo Record
Walk the route before anything comes off the truck, and walk it carrying an imaginary slab rather than empty-handed. Note the tightest turn, the narrowest doorway, the ceiling fixture at head height on the landing, the newel post that will not clear a diagonal, and the floor transitions that will catch a dolly wheel. On commercial jobs add the loading dock rules, the freight elevator dimensions and protection requirements, the corridors you are permitted to use, and the hours the building allows noisy work.
Then document what already exists. A timestamped photo record taken before any protection goes down is the single most useful piece of paperwork an installer carries. Shoot wide for context and close for detail, cover every surface on the carry path plus the work area itself, and deliberately capture pre-existing damage: the scuffed baseboard, the cracked tile at the threshold, the dented appliance panel. Store those images against the job number rather than on somebody's phone, where they will be gone by the time the claim arrives.
Use the same walkthrough to settle scope out loud. Who moves the furniture, and by when. Who disconnects and reconnects the appliances and the plumbing. Whether the customer is staying in the property, whether pets or children need to be kept clear of the work area, where the crew may park and stage, and which door they will use. Silence on these points is how a two-hour install turns into a half-day of negotiation with a homeowner standing in the kitchen.
Building the Protection Envelope
Floors and the Carry Path
Floor protection is a two-layer problem. The lower layer manages grit and moisture, the upper layer manages impact and point loads. On finished wood, breathable protection is the safer default: non-breathable plastic sheeting laid over a floor that is still curing, or over any floor with residual moisture beneath it, traps that moisture against the finish. Over the top of that goes a hardboard or heavy paperboard layer wide enough that nobody steps off the edge, with seams taped board to board rather than taped down onto the finish itself.
Coverage should be continuous from the entry door to the work area, because the moment a crew has to step from board to bare floor with a top on their shoulder is the moment grit gets ground in. Run protection full width in corridors, tuck it to the baseboard, and tape seams so nothing lifts under a dolly wheel. Carpet gets its own treatment with a self-adhesive film applied to dry carpet only, run in the direction of travel and lifted the same day rather than left for a week.
Stairs, Thresholds and Tight Turns
Stairs concentrate every risk on the job into a few square feet. Anything that shifts underfoot while somebody is carrying stone is a serious injury waiting to happen, so stair protection has to be positively fixed, not merely laid down, and it must have a non-slip walking surface. Wrap the nosings, protect the handrail and the wall on the outside of the turn, and pad the newel post. Thresholds and transition strips deserve their own board bridge so wheels do not chip the edge on the way through.
Walls, Corners and Door Casings
Stone strikes walls at the corner of the slab, which usually lands somewhere between hip and shoulder height on outside corners and door casings. Foam or plastic corner guards on every outside corner along the route, jamb protectors in every doorway the stone passes through, and padding on any fixed obstruction the crew must squeeze past will absorb the contact that drywall will not. Fix all of it with low-tack tape or friction fit; aggressive adhesive tape on fresh paint pulls the finish off when it comes down.
Cabinetry, Appliances and Adjacent Trades
Cabinets are the surface most likely to be damaged and the most expensive to make right, because finished ends and painted doors rarely touch up invisibly. Remove or tape doors and drawers shut, empty and protect the boxes the crew will lean over, and pad every finished end within reach of a setting operation. Appliances either come out or get covered and masked, with particular attention to vents and intakes that will happily inhale stone dust. Cover flooring adhesive, fresh grout and painted surfaces belonging to other trades as carefully as your own work.

Pro Tip: Tape protection to itself, never to the customer finish. Board-to-board seams, film-to-film laps and guards held by friction all come up clean at the end of the day. Tape stuck directly to fresh paint, new casing lacquer or a recently finished floor turns your protection material into the thing that caused the damage.
Dust Containment and On-Site Cutting
The default on-site cutting policy should be that nothing is cut inside a finished space unless there is no alternative. Field modifications happen anyway: a scribe that has to be adjusted, a seam that needs relief, a faucet hole moved after a late fixture change. The workable answer is to establish a cutting station outside or in a garage or dock area, protect it properly, and treat any cut that must be made in the room itself as an exception requiring dust capture at the tool and containment at the doorway.
Containment at the doorway means a poly barrier sealed to jamb, floor and header with a zipper access door, not a sheet drooping from two staples. Where the work is dusty or the space is occupied, move air out of the work area so it stays negative relative to the rest of the building, and filter what you capture. A HEPA filter by the United States Department of Energy definition removes at least 99.97 percent of particles at 0.3 micron, the most penetrating particle size, which is the performance level to insist on for both extraction and vacuums.
Silica is the reason this matters beyond finish protection. The OSHA permissible exposure limit for respirable crystalline silica is 50 micrograms per cubic meter as an eight-hour time-weighted average, with an action level of 25 micrograms per cubic meter over the same period. Engineered stone and many natural stones carry substantial crystalline silica content, and a few minutes of unprotected dry cutting in a closed kitchen can generate an exposure that no amount of afterwards cleaning undoes.
The construction standard at 29 CFR 1926.1153 gives contractors a specified exposure control route through Table 1. For a handheld power saw used with integrated water delivery, Table 1 calls for a respirator with an assigned protection factor of at least 10 when the work is done indoors or in an enclosed area for four hours or less per shift, and for any use exceeding four hours per shift regardless of location. Employers must also maintain a written exposure control plan and designate a competent person to implement it.
Housekeeping is regulated too. The standard does not allow dry sweeping or dry brushing where it could contribute to silica exposure, unless wet sweeping or HEPA-filtered vacuuming is not feasible, and it restricts using compressed air to clean surfaces or clothing. On a countertop install this translates into a simple site rule: vacuum with a HEPA unit, wet wipe, and never send a crew member out to the driveway to blow himself off with the compressor. Engineered quartz in particular demands diamond tooling rated for engineered stone, never standard masonry tooling.
Water, Slurry and Older Buildings
Wet cutting solves a dust problem by creating a water problem, and the water carries the dust with it. Slurry stains paving, decking, block paving joints and lawn, and it sets hard in a drain trap. Cut over a tray or a lined containment berm, collect the runoff rather than letting it sheet away, allow the solids to settle, and dispose of both the water and the settled fines according to local rules. Rinsing slurry into a storm drain is a discharge, not a clean-up.
Realistically, genuine wet cutting inside a finished occupied room is rarely workable. The practical options are an outdoor or garage cutting station, a rail saw or grinder fitted with a dust-shrouded vacuum attachment for small in-room cuts, or taking the piece back out to the truck. Deciding which of those applies before the crew arrives is what keeps a field change from becoming an improvised cut on a protected floor with a shop vacuum that was never rated for fine dust.
Older buildings add a legal overlay. Under the Environmental Protection Agency's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, renovation performed for compensation in housing and child-occupied facilities built before 1978 must be carried out by a certified firm using certified renovators and lead-safe work practices where more than six square feet of interior painted surface is disturbed. Removing an old backsplash or cutting into a painted wall for a new run can cross that line, so confirm the property's age during the walkthrough rather than on the day.
Clean-Up, Final Walkthrough and the Crew Kit
Clean up from the top down and from the far end of the job back toward the door. HEPA vacuum surfaces and the protection material itself before anything is lifted, because peeling up a dusty board and folding it in the hallway simply relocates the dust you spent the day capturing. Take containment barriers down last, wipe hard surfaces damp rather than dry, and carry the debris out the same route you protected rather than the nearest convenient door.
Then walk the job with the customer while the crew is still on site. Compare against the before photos where anything is questioned, agree any punch items in writing, and shoot a short after set for the job file. Handing over a clean space and a documented condition record turns the end of an install into a sign-off rather than an open question, and it is what stops a scuff nobody noticed becoming a chargeback three weeks later.
